Nature & Wildlife

Chaudefour Valley - to the eastern side of the Sancy range, this valley was cut through the lava and granite by Quaternary era glaciers. Today, this is a protected nature reserve of particular interest to geologists and naturalists alike, as the peat bogs and slopes produce many interesting rocks, flora and fauna.

Flora - among the species you may find here are the unusual purple orchid, yellow gentian, mountain arnica and red saw-wort. Away from he mountains on the Artense plateau where pasture and reclaimed land is found, gorse, myrtle and ferns are abundant and many wild mushrooms can be found in the dense forests.

Fauna - Deer roam throughout the region's forests and along with wild boar, can be found in our local wood. The Auvergne is an area of cheese production, which obviously means cows and goats are abundant. Of note is the firery red 'Salers' breed of cattle which is reputed to lose it's vivid colour if it leaves the volcanic region.

Our neighbours will usually move their cattle past the house each day, to a different grazing area; a typical French rural sight and sound, as many are fitted with alpine bells.

We have regular visits from many birds, including buzzards, song thrushes, jays and nuthatches, whilst bats can often be seen on summer evenings, swooping across the fields in search of food.

Just to relax in the garden is peaceful enough for many of our guests.....
